SWITCH: Empowering Digital Literacy Across PETRONAS

Project Overview

SWITCH is a microlearning platform developed to strengthen digital literacy among PETRONAS employees, serving a key part of the company’s digital transformation journey. As the learning content developer, strategist, and platform experience manager, I was responsible for shaping the learning strategy, developing content, and managing the platform's overall user experience.

The initiative aimed to reach over 50,000 employees across diverse functions, geographies, and business segments. This scale presented both a challenge and an opportunity — to design a learning experience that was inclusive, engaging, and efficient for a highly varied workforce.

From Insight to Impact: Microlearning Design Process

The development of SWITCH followed a structured and iterative process, ensuring each step was informed by learner data and aligned with business strategic goals.

  • Conducted user research to understand current levels of digital awareness, learner needs, and engagement barriers.

  • Designed the micro-learning framework, planned content flow, and established engagement strategies such as gamification and multimodal content delivery.

  • Collaborated with subject matter experts to create concise, focused learning modules in text, visual, and video formats.

  • Deployed the platform across the organization, focusing on user accessibility, communication, and engagement to ensure widespread adoption.

  • Assessed impact through quizzes, analytics, and user feedback sessions, using findings to refine both content and platform experience.

The project began with an in-depth user research phase to identify employees’ existing digital awareness and skill levels. Surveys, interviews, and focus groups revealed a wide range of competency levels and digital awareness, reflecting PETRONAS’s diverse workforce. These insights helped define the learning objectives and the content format, ensuring that SWITCH addressed real skill gaps and encouraged active participation across all roles.

02  Learning Experience Design:

Designing for Inclusivity & Engagement

The learning experiences were designed to be simple and inclusive. To meet the varied needs of employees, content was provided in three formats — text, graphic, and video — allowing individuals to engage with each lesson.

Digital topics were organized into clear categories for intuitive navigation, with learning paths that encouraged self-directed progress. A gamified system added a competitive, social layer—learners earned points for completing topics, contributing to team scores on a public leaderboard, which strengthened motivation and team engagement.

03  Content Development

Developing Microlearning at Scale

Each learning module was designed to deliver essential digital concepts in short, digestible snippets that fit naturally into a busy workday. Working closely with digital subject matter experts, I developed a content style that balanced technical clarity with engaging storytelling. Consistency in design language, tone, and pacing helped create a unified and professional learning experience across the platform.

Content Format:

Graphic

Text

Quick and straightforward explanations for learners who preferred reading or needed low-bandwidth access.

Short and engaging narratives that brought concepts to life through scenarios, demo and expert insights.

Bitesize Text and Graphic content

Video

Simplified complex ideas through infographics and visuals, making digital concepts easier to grasp.

04  Implementation and Rollout

Implementing a Seamless Learning Experience

The SWITCH rollout was guided by a targeted communication plan to build awareness and enthusiasm across the company. The platform was optimized for device usability—ensuring a smooth experience for employees in offices, plants, and remote sites. Great emphasis was placed on usability and learning flow to maintain confidence and minimize technical barriers for all users.

05 Evaluation and Continuous Improvement

Measuring and Enhancing Effectiveness

Learning effectiveness was measured through quizzes embedded at the end of each learning path, where users consistently achieved over 80% average scores, indicating strong understanding and retention. Beyond quantitative measures, quarterly focus groups and user feedback forms provided critical qualitative insights that informed content updates, technical improvements, and experience enhancements.
